I’ve always been drawn to images. As a child, I would open the magazines my parents had around the house, National Geographic, Vogue, Vanity Fair, various photography books, and barely read a word. I wanted to see the photographs. I loved discovering portraits of actors and artists I admired, and I would cut my favorite images from magazines and cover my walls.

I’ve always been drawn to images. INFLUENCES

I was fascinated by photographers like Annie Leibovitz, Cecil Beaton, and Irving Penn, whose portraits could be elegant, theatrical and even fantastical, yet somehow reveal something essential about the person in front of the camera. They seemed to capture something both true and aspirational, a heightened version of who that person already was.

I also grew up going to an art-focused school, surrounded by people who seemed to know instinctively how to make exquisitely beautiful things with their hands. Some of those childhood friends have gone on to become extraordinary artists & craftspeople. For a long time I never felt I had quite found my own visual language. I knew how I wanted things to look before I knew how to make them. Photography was the first medium that allowed me to close that gap.

TIME & PLACE

My life as an opera singer has brought me all over the world, to Saint Petersburg, Venice, Palm Beach, New York City, Vienna, Rome, to name a few. I often find myself overwhelmed by the beauty of the places I’m lucky enough to inhabit, and wanting to preserve the particular feeling of my transient time there. These are places that have existed for centuries and will continue long after I leave. Photography has become my way of making a little time capsule of those places and of the fleeting period in which I get to call them home.

That same instinct is how I photograph people. I know how rare and wonderful it is to see a photograph of yourself and think, yes, that’s me. I want to give that feeling to other people.

Whether I’m photographing a singer, an artist at work, a stage performance, or a city I’m passing through, I’m looking for the same thing: beauty, character, and something true. I love creating images that can be polished, romantic or theatrical while still feeling unmistakably like the person in them. I want to capture not only who someone is, but something of who they imagine themselves to be, and create a photograph they are genuinely proud to call their own.
